Prayer Guide – 1st Quarter 2016

one-million-minutes-logo1 320x320
The best resource for extraordinary praying is the Word of God.  Therefore, our goal is to pray prayers that are shaped by the scriptures and not shaped by our opinions, wants, and desires.  Don Whitney writes, “To pray the Bible, you simply go through the passage line by line, talking to God about whatever comes to mind as you read the text.  Anyone can do that” (Donald S. Whitney – Praying the Bible) As you read a verse of the Scripture you may want to ask, “If this verse were to become a prayer for my life, my church, or someone in my community, what would it sound like?”

In an effort to strengthen unity and encourage Christian growth, we have put together a prayer guide that will allow our church to be focused on the same scriptures each day as we seek to Glorify Him.  Feel free to use the guide to pray along with us.

As we begin a new year, our focus will celebrate the mighty acts of God.  We will look at four weeks of scriptures to  guide our prayers in this area:

  • The mighty acts of God in generations past;
  • The mighty  acts of Jesus Christ on our behalf;
  • The mighty acts of God in our present situation; and
  • The God who holds our future.

Our purpose is to celebrate the  past and know that the God who brought us this great salvation in which we live is the same God who works in our present and who holds our future.  We can then, with renewed strength and faith in God,   experience His mighty acts today.

The second month, we will pray scriptures that will call the church and individual members to repentance.  During this four weeks, we will read scriptures related to repentance  in the four areas as follows:

  • Acknowledging our sins;
  • Confessing our sins;
  • Repenting of our sins (turning away from sin toward God); and
  • Living the victorious life.

All the great revitalizations throughout church history begin with prayer and repentance.

The next three weeks will look at the gospel that  empowers our lives and our prayers and  gives us everything we need pertaining to life.  “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)

  • The gospel of salvation will bring us to a saving faith in Christ.
  • The gospel will sanctify our body, soul, spirit, and all of life to the glory of God.
  • The gospel will take us all the way home to the glory of God.

The final two weeks will focus on the relationship we have with God.  Christ in us and us in Christ are maintained through the communication we have with God through His word and prayer.  We will pray through the 119th Psalm.  Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. [6] If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. [7] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”  (John 15:4-7 ESV)

Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32 ESV)

Extended Time of Prayer with God

We are suggesting sometime during this quarter you spend an extended time of Bible reading, meditation and prayer with God.  The first month celebrating the mighty acts of God lends itself well to doing a time of extended prayer.  You will need to set aside a minimum of two hours of uninterrupted time, your Bible, pencil, paper, an open mind and heart.  Start with the scriptures for week seventeen day one and read through until week twenty day seven.  Read, mediate, listen, respond in prayer to what God is saying to you.  You will find as you mediate on these passages that God will reveal Himself as a Sovereign God who has mightily worked in the past to bring salvation to fallen man.  He is the God who is mightily at work today and the God who holds our future.  We will grow in our faith and confidence that the God who worked so mightily in our past will be the  God who accomplishes the mighty acts who will “bring us all the way home.”

The other sections, likewise,  support an extended time of prayer with God.  The section on  God’s call to repentance; acknowledging our sin, confessing our sin, repenting of our sin, and living victorious, works well.  The third section with its focus on the gospel and the last section with its focus on Psalm 119 and the word of God works well for an extended time of prayer.

Tips on how to spend extended time with God

Why have an extended time of prayer?

  • To have uninterrupted fellowship with God.
  • To grow your faith and confidence in God.
  • To solidify Christ’s lordship in our lives.
  • To receive future guidance from God.

Jesus spent extended times of prayer with God.

  • How can I pray that long?
    • Listen to God as much or more as you talk with Him.
      • Pause to mediate and pray scripture back to God.
  • What do I do during this time?
    • Read your Bible.
      • Mediatate on what you are reading.
      • Pray for whatever comes to your mind.
      • Write things down.
