See what GOD is doing…

God is busy working through our church to minister to our members, our community, our country, and our world.  We’ve experienced God first hand in the past year, and many lives have been changed, and many souls have been added to the kingdom.

Here are just a few of the memorable activities and events of the last year.  May we never forget how God has worked, and may we build on these experiences for our future.

Million Minutes of Prayer (MMOP)

Acts 3:19-20 calls us to repent that our sins may be blotted out and that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.  Those times of ‘refreshing’ or revival are what we need personally, corporately as a Church, and globally in our world today.  Biblically and historically, such times of revival have always been preceded by extraordinary prayer.   Therefore, we as a Church have committed to a season of extraordinary prayer. In fact, we have committed to pray 1,000,000 minutes of extraordinary prayer over the next 12 months. We are longing for God’s refreshing presence in our lives, our church, and our community.  We would love for you to join us!  Keep reading to learn more and to see how you can get involved.

Professions of Faith, Baptisms, New Members

God has greatly blessed First Baptist Athens in the past year.  We have seen many people come forward to declare their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. There is no greater blessing than this!

We’ve seen many baptisms this year as well.  Our church rejoices as new believers obey God and make public their decision to follow Jesus. Our Pastor considers performing a baptism as one of his highest honors, and he’s been very busy this year. One of the new things we have done with baptisms, is that when the weather is warm enough, we have baptisms on the front porch! We want our community to see that lives are being changed by Jesus.

Personal Growth

God is certainly working in our church as a whole, but He is also changing and transforming the lives of our individual members.  There is not enough space here to tell of the wondrous ways that God is moving in the lives of our members. But one thing is certain – God Is Working!  Thank you God for your love and care! We thank God for His unfailing love and grace. He truly cares about every detail of our lives, and He wants nothing more than to walk closely with each one of us, day-by-day. He wants us to need Him, trust Him, and rely upon Him for all our needs.  Check out their stories here…

Special Events

We often have special events and productions at First Baptist Athens.  We are well known around the community for popular and meaningful services, and our goal is always to bring glory to God through our efforts.  We have been greatly blessed by seeing many people come to Christ as a result.  We want to be salt and light in our community, and our special events are one way we are carrying out this purpose.

Bow The Knee:  At Easter last year, the First Baptist Athens Choir and Orchestra put on a full scale musical production and play called, “Bow The Knee.” The play centered around the crucifixion and resurrection of our savior, Jesus Christ.  A powerful gospel message was presented! The great news is this: our auditorium was packed for two different presentations of the program.  The gospel was presented, and many decisions for Christ were made.  Our church has followed all decisions with discipleship efforts.  We are most thankful to God for using our Choir and Orchestra to make such an impact on our community.

Summer Camps

24Youth Camp: The purpose of the Youth Summer Camp program is to support parents and the Church in teaching youth to develop their potential while learning that God’s values are practical in everyday life. Every program is designed with the greater purpose in mind, and we desire to make a positive difference in the lives of our youth.

We are blessed with fabulous camp facilities at Camp Cherokee.  This year, we had dozens of young people attend our summer camp program.  There were several who  formed stronger relationships centered around Christian principles.  We are confident that these camps will make a lasting impression on our youth and help them in life far into the future.

Mission Trips

Missions is a big part of our church life!  We support missions through our cooperative program giving, but we also participate directly by going on mission trips each year. This year we are sending groups to Honduras, Italy, New York, and Vancouver to help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Those who participated were greatly blessed, as were those we ministered to.  The mission trips were bathed in prayer, and God was with us every step of the way.

If you would like to join us on a mission trip in the coming year, we will have interest meetings as we prepare for new missions opportunities.  Please join us to see if an upcoming mission trip is right for you.

Fall Festival:  First Baptist Athens typically hosts a Fall Festival each year around Halloween.  We wish to provide a Christian message and atmosphere to the community as an alternative to traditional Halloween activities.  This year we had thousands of people visit our church grounds for a great evening of fun.  We featured free meals, free candy, carnival booths, bouncy booths, and even a petting zoo.  The whole thing culminated with a great gospel presentation. We were most pleased with the turnout in the community and the impact we had on the lives of others.  We thank God for blessing our programs.

Church Picnics

14There’s one thing we certainly know how to do at First Baptist Athens, and that is to have fun!  This year, we took the entire church out on picnics!  And boy did we have fun!

Our first picnic last year was at the beautiful Camp Cherokee near Calhoun.  Over 200 people came out for food, fun and fellowship on a nice summer’s evening. There was swimming, boating, fellowship and more.  And, of course, there was food and fun!

Church Picnics at First Baptist Athens are just one more way to grow in your church family.

Vacation Bible Schools

Summer VBS:
Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Athens is a big deal. This is one ministry where we impact hundreds of lives in our community with the Gospel. Each year, we see many children put their trust in Christ as Lord and Savior, and this past year was not exception.  VBS 2015 was a huge success.

Our whole church comes together around VBS each year.  Entire families will participate in the week-long adventure. Adults, seniors, teens, and kids alike; they all pitch in to make the program great. Vacation Bible School is a meaning and fun place to serve others and be blessed yourself. We were glad to have full use of our new facilities for VBS this year now that the building process is complete!

Flash Mobs

If you’ve never seen a flash mob, you’ve missed a real treat. Not sure what a flash mob is? Check out the video at right to see our flash mob (please ignore links at the end).

This year at Christmas time, we performed four flash mobs around Athens.  We went to Lowe’s, K-mart, Belk, and Ingle’s during the busy shopping season and broke out in song and praise to Jesus Christ our king!  We did a slate of Christmas songs, and we even had Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus.

Needless to say, it was AWESOME!

Building Campaigns

More Than A Building:  After two years of planning, our Long Range Planning Committee was led by God to examine our needs as a church. The result was a recommendation to embark on a campaign to renovate our facilities and to demolish our oldest building and rebuild a new facility in its place.  The recommendations were presented to the church as a whole, and much prayer and study was given toward making a decision on the matter. The church voted to move forward with the project.

A capital fundraising campaign was conducted, and the members of our church made tremendous commitments to fund the project. Offerings were made, and the funds were provided to begin the project.

Construction was completed in mid-April 2015 and took approximately 16-17 months to complete.  Now that the work is done, our existing facilities are in the process of being brought up to date through renovation to serve the future needs of our growing church.
