Today’s Sermon:

The Songs of Christmas

Nunc dimittis: Simeon’s Song

Luke 2:21-32

by:  Dr. Bill Henard

First Thoughts: One desire we should have at Christmas is to see Jesus – not yet with our physical eyes – it is to see Him with our spiritual eyes – to meet Him in our hearts and to have our lives changed by His birth.  Notice how that happens in our lives.

  • Seeing Christ Begins with an Understanding of Our Spiritual Poverty.
    • 24 and to offer a sacrifice . . . a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons

  • Seeing Christ Demands Lifelong Devotion.
    • 25 a man in Jerusalem . . . righteous and devout looking forward to Israel’s consolation

  • Seeing Christ Prepares Us for Life and Death.
    • 29 Now, Master, You can dismiss Your slave in peace

Takeaway:

  • Christ delivers us from sin.
  • He comes to those who are spiritually in need – those who realize that He is their only hope.
  • He is the entirety of salvation – not a part of it. He is all that salvation is – and knowing Him brings peace.
  • And when we know Christ, we can live for Him.
  • Let Christmas call you to a lifelong devotion to live for Christ.
